Questions about acne-safe skincare, acne-safe ingredients, or choosing products for acne-prone skin? Start here!
“Pore-clogging” is an informal term used for ingredients or products that may contribute to comedone formation in acne-prone skin. Comedones are clogged hair follicles that can appear as blackheads or whiteheads.
You may also see the term comedogenic, meaning something has the potential to promote comedone formation.
Here’s where it gets more complicated: an ingredient’s presence alone doesn’t guarantee a product will clog your pores. Concentration, formulation, how the product is used and your individual skin all matter.
That’s why at Clarity Skin Studio, we look at the entire routine, not just one ingredient in isolation.
Comedogenic means having the potential to contribute to comedone formation, including blackheads and whiteheads.
However, “comedogenic” and “non-comedogenic” aren’t guarantees of how a finished product will behave on your skin. Formulation, concentration and individual acne triggers matter too.
Translation? Don’t judge your entire skincare routine by one ingredient or marketing claim.
Acne develops when pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, with inflammation and other biological factors also playing a role.
For someone who is acne-prone, a routine that works perfectly for someone else MAY contribute to congestion, irritation or breakouts.
That’s why acne treatment shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all.
At Clarity Skin Studio, product recommendations are based on your skin, current routine, acne patterns, lifestyle, and treatment plan.
Start with the full ingredient list, not the claims on the front of the package.
Compare the ingredient list with the A–Z guide above, keeping in mind that one flagged ingredient doesn’t automatically make a finished product “bad” or unsuitable for acne-prone skin.
Formulation matters.
If you’re changing products while actively working to clear acne, introduce products thoughtfully rather than replacing your entire routine at once.
And if you’re a Clarity Acne Bootcamp client, send us the product before adding it. That’s what we are here for!
This is where ingredient lists need context.
Silicones like dimethicone are commonly misunderstood and aren’t automatically pore-clogging.
Fatty alcohols such as cetyl and stearyl alcohol serve different purposes than drying alcohols and may be perfectly well tolerated.
Oils vary too. Coconut oil, for example, is commonly flagged for acne-prone skin, while other oils may be better tolerated depending on the formulation and individual.
The takeaway: “natural,” “oil-free” and even “non-comedogenic” labels don’t tell you everything about how a product will perform on your skin.
Some ingredients frequently discussed in acne-focused skincare include isopropyl myristate, ethylhexyl palmitate, coconut oil, cocoa butter, wheat germ oil, certain algae extracts, lanolin and acetylated lanolin.
That doesn’t mean every product containing one of these ingredients will cause acne.
Finished formulation and individual skin response matter.
Use the complete A–Z ingredient guide above when checking a product.
No. Acne-prone skin is highly individual.
A product that contributes to congestion for one person may be well tolerated by another.
Concentration, formulation, frequency of use, other products in your routine and your individual skin can all influence the outcome.
That’s one reason we don’t believe in blindly labelling every ingredient as “good” or “bad.”
Clear skin comes from understanding the bigger picture.
You don’t need another TikTok routine or a drawer full of products that didn’t work.
